A hundred years ago you had large families because 1) high infant mortality and 2) the family was the social net for their elderly in their old age[see - honor thy mother and father]. Modern medicine took care of number 1. The state took over number 2. File under the unexpected consequences of trying to doing good. |

| #1 Translated from the original European: "Gimme gimme gimmme free stuff!" Why should we fight and die for a continent that won't defend itself against even an unarmed invasion? At least with nuclear-armed Israel we get an ally that actually fights. Contrast this to nuclear-armed France whose weapons will be in the hands of Muslims in another generation. |
