[Regnum] Israel has allowed four times fewer trucks with humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip than the European Union promised. This was reported on August 7 by the Euractiv portal, citing a document from the European Commission.
And by what right under international law does the EU make commitments for Israel? “Between 31 July and 4 August, the UN and our partners report that 188 trucks were unloaded at crossing points into Gaza,” the document says.
However, that is significantly less than the roughly 800 trucks that an EU official says are supposed to be arriving in Gaza every five days under a deal recently reached by the EU's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, with Israel. Under that agreement, the details of which remain unclear, about 160 trucks of humanitarian aid are supposed to be arriving in Gaza every day.
According to the UN, between 500 and 600 trucks a day are needed to prevent further famine.
The document also notes that Israel claims 737 trucks passed through the two main crossings at Kerem Shalom and Zikim between July 31 and August 4. But the source says Israel includes commercial and GHF operations in its daily truck count.
