[YouTube] Benjamin Netanyahu said his plan to expand military action in Gaza is “the best way to end the war”. The Israeli prime minister told a press conference in Jerusalem that he has “no choice” but to “finish the job” and “defeat” Hamas. While up to three quarters of the territory is currently under Israeli control, Hamas still has strongholds, including Gaza City. “Dismantling” that stronghold is “the best way to end the war,” Mr Netanyahu said. Gazans are “begging us and begging the world” to be freed from the terror group and Israel’s goal is not to occupy Gaza, but to free it, he added. He went on to outline Israel’s five principles for concluding the war, which include freeing the hostages, demilitarising Gaza, putting security control of the strip into Israeli hands and establishing a non-Israeli peaceful civil administration, as well as dismantling Hamas. Mr Netanyahu also said that if Israel was implementing “a starvation policy”, then “no one in Gaza would have survived after two years of war” as he stood in front of pictures reportedly showing malnourished children in the enclave, which he labelled “fake”. |
