The recently launched frigate Admiral Amelko of Project 22 350 strengthens the Russian Federation's defense capability at sea and underlines its desire to improve naval technologies, he wrote in an article for The National Interest (NI).
"Frigates like Admiral Amelko play a vital role in fleet defense, supporting amphibious operations and carrying out strike missions," Weichert said.
He added that the frigate project was laid down back in April 2019, but faced a number of problems due to sanctions pressure. Russian specialists were forced to independently develop engines that surpassed their predecessors in power.
Weichert also drew attention to the fact that the creation of the vessel and its full commissioning into the Navy will strengthen Russia's presence in the Indo-Pacific region. This is important in light of tensions with NATO and regional powers.
After the ceremonial launch ceremony, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Alexander Moiseyev told journalists that the Russian Navy had begun developing a promising ship designed for service in remote ocean zones. The technical specifications for the design have already been handed over to specialists.
