[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] A teenager has been arrested after a woman was dragged into the bushes and raped in front of the Eiffel Tower. The suspect, a Libyan 17-year-old, was taken into custody shortly after the horrific attack near the Champ-de-Mars in the early hours of Tuesday morning. According to initial evidence gathered by police officers at the scene, it was 2.40am when a man forcibly dragged the victim, a Ukrainian woman, 32, behind a bush. He then allegedly sexually assaulted and raped her. The victim's screams quickly alerted police on a patrol nearby. The suspect, who was reportedly drunk, was immediately arrested. The young man introduced himself as a 17-year-old teenager of Libyan nationality, Le Parisien reports.
Tragically, cases of sexual violence are common at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, where nearly six million visitors visit each year. In 2023, a Mexican tourist said she was raped by five men at a garden near the tourist attraction. The 27-year-old woman told authorities the attack happened between the early hours of July 26 and 27 at the Champ de Mars park in Paris. And in October the same year, a British police officer said she was also raped at the foot of the tower. The victim, 23, told French police she was attacked by a man wielding a knife in the Champ de Mars park shortly before midnight that evening. She said the suspect pulled out a knife as she tried to deflect his advances. After the man fled, she called the police. An anti-crime squad rushed to the scene and the victim was taken care of by firefighters. Police arrested a 35-year-old man around an hour after the woman reported the attack and gave a description of the suspect. The victim was a tourist staying overnight with a friend in the French capital, according to Le Parisien. The attacker pounced after the victim went behind a bush to go to the toilet. She was separated from her friend for only a few moments when the attacker threatened her with a knife. Last March, Rachida Dati, the borough's mayor, made a shocking statement at a neighborhood meeting. She said that 'sexual assaults,' 'not to mention rapes,' took place 'every day' on the Champ-de-Mars. Ms Dati also said the area suffered from 'under-equipment.' The Paris police headquarters told Le Parisien: 'In 2024, the police headquarters recorded one rape in the Champ-de-Mars area, compared to five in 2023, and seven sexual assaults, compared to nine in 2023,' That's one rape in 2024, and seven sexual assaults. | ||
