#1 The whole idea was that some dictator/mullah,etc seeing a waterborne Marine assault group parked off their shores might give them pause.

It must thin consolidate and sustain the beach-head and establish battle-space dominance against land, sea and air response. This is the core mission of the Marines and their structure, doctrine and equipment must support that, period!
